A Small Business Site That Runs the Business

Overview

I took Cafe Mallow from brand and responsive website to ordering, payment, fulfillment, and back-office operations.

Cafe Mallow is the first live proof: a custom small-business website connected directly to Sweetspot's commerce and operations system.

Problem

The Website Was Only the Visible Part

A small-business site can look finished while orders, availability, pickup, payments, and updates still live in separate tools. Every handoff adds work for the owner and friction for the customer.

  1. Duplicate dataprice, inventory, and availability drift by channel
  2. Hidden operationscheckout rarely understands cutoff, pickup, or wholesale terms
  3. No clean handofforders and payouts arrive without the context needed to fulfill them

Core decision

Build the Front Door and the Operating System

I designed and implemented Cafe Mallow's responsive site and custom domain, then connected it to the same product record that runs checkout and back-office work.

Principles

  1. Brand to browser — responsive layout, typography, photography, and navigation
  2. Browse to order — menu, cart, checkout, pickup, and delivery
  3. Owner controlled — products, prices, availability, images, and orders stay connected
One catalog controls the products and prices customers see.
The same data powers discovery across local sellers.

Tradeoff

Structure Beats a Blank Canvas

Reusable sections and design tokens give each business a distinct site without making checkout, responsive behavior, accessibility, or analytics fragile.

  1. Constrained sectionsenough range without fragile layouts
  2. Shared commerce componentscart, cutoff, pickup, and pricing work in every theme
  3. Versioned publishingdraft, preview, publish, and rollback are explicit states

Current state

cafe-mallow.com Is Live

Cafe Mallow now has a responsive public site connected to Sweetspot's catalog and operator tools. Next I am measuring checkout completion, repeat orders, and how quickly another business can launch.

Orders keep items, quantities, status, and totals in one scannable view.

Reflection

Key Learnings

  1. 01

Model the Work Before the Screen

The shared product and order states made the interface simpler than another layer of navigation ever could.

  2. 02

    Freedom Needs Guardrails

Structured sections protect checkout, accessibility, and responsive behavior while still giving sellers a brand of their own.

  3. 03

    Shipping Exposes the Real UX

Implementing the workflow surfaced edge cases in pricing, permissions, and fulfillment before they became handoff problems.
